What is the Calgary Stampede?
The Calgary Stampede is a 10-day annual rodeo, exhibition, and festival held every July since 1912. It's one of the largest outdoor shows in the world — drawing 1.2 million visitors to the 100-hectare Stampede Park grounds south of downtown.
But Stampede isn't just the grounds. The entire city participates — free pancake breakfasts happen every morning in parking lots and corporate atriums, country music spills out of every bar, and even Calgary's famously reserved residents start wearing cowboy hats. For 10 days, the whole city becomes the party.
What's at Stampede
Stampede Rodeo
The world's richest outdoor rodeo. Daily afternoon performances at the Grandstand, with top cowboys competing for $2M+ in prize money.
Chuckwagon Races
The 'Half Mile of Hell' — nine chuckwagons thunder around the track nightly. The most thrilling 90 seconds in Stampede.
Grandstand Show
World-class entertainers, acrobats, and a spectacular fireworks finale every night after the chuckwagons. Included with Grandstand ticket.
The Midway
One of North America's largest midways — rides, games, and the iconic Stampede food (mini donuts, Indian tacos, deep-fried everything).
Nashville North & BMO Centre
Live country and pop acts perform nightly. Many shows are included with grounds admission. Check the daily schedule.
Free Pancake Breakfasts
Hundreds of free pancake breakfasts across the city every morning of Stampede. Downtown, in parkades, at malls — all free, first come first served.

First-Timer Tips
Wear boots or comfortable walking shoes
You'll walk 5–10km on Stampede grounds. Cowboy boots are traditional but any comfortable shoes work. Cowboy hat optional — but fun.
Sun protection is non-negotiable
Calgary's 338 sunny days peak in July. Sunscreen, a hat, and water are essential. Grounds can feel 5°C hotter than the city.
Start your day with a free pancake breakfast
Breakfasts start at 7–8am across the city. They're genuinely free and a beloved Calgary tradition. Google 'Stampede pancake breakfast map' for locations.
Take the CTrain — parking is a nightmare
CTrain Red Line runs directly to Victoria Park/Stampede station. Extended hours during Stampede. Much faster than driving.
Separate grounds admission from Grandstand tickets
Grounds admission gets you the Midway, Nashville North, and free entertainment. The Grandstand (rodeo + chuckwagons + show) requires a separate ticket.
Go on a weekday if you can
Weekdays are significantly less crowded. Opening day and the final weekend are the busiest. A Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon is the sweet spot.
Getting to Stampede Park
CTrain
Red Line to Victoria Park/Stampede station — right at the gates. Extended hours during Stampede. Strongly recommended.
Walk from downtown
Stampede Park is a 20-minute walk south of downtown along Macleod Trail or through East Village.
Park & Ride
Remote parking available at several locations with shuttle buses. Check calgarystampede.com for this year's P&R map.
